The Hunt
On a typical goose hunt, we meet in Bay City or El Campo no later than 4:30 a.m. After a quick breakfast and a cup of hot coffee, you'll head to the fields, following the guide in your vehicle to a pre-scouted field. Unless you've made reservations ahead of time for an "Executive Class Hunt", you then help the guide set out a decoy spread. This may consist of 500-1,000 decoys depending on the time of season and hunting conditions. Our guides have top notch hunting equipment, and most have either a 4X4 truck, or ATV, or both, to try and make this chore as easy as possible, but it's work under the best of conditions, so be prepared.
After the decoy spread is out, you'll be given white parkas to wear in an attempt to blend in with the decoys. Laying flat on your back in the mud isn't normally a lot of fun, but it's necessary to stay below the level of the decoys. Snow geese will spot anything sticking up, and usually spook before they get in good range.
Once things are set up right, the guide will go to work calling to get the geese in close. All of our guides are very experienced water fowlers and know what to do. One is even a two-time World Champion Snow Goose Caller. Of course, it's your hunt, and if you want to call, bring one with you.
When the geese get just right for the hunters, the guide will call the shot. You then raise up, pick out A bird ( Don't flock shoot! It never works! ), and pop that one bird! Then crank in another round and go for goose numbers two and three.
Any birds knocked down will then be fetched up by the guide's trained retriever. On private party hunts only, you may use your own dogs, if desired, and if you let us know about it in advance.
After the hunting is over, the decoys are picked up and packed for the next day's hunt, the birds are taken to the processor and then you are free to enjoy your afternoon.
With prior arrangements, a guided afternoon duck hunt can be made. Bay fishing is another afternoon choice and can be excellent during the fall and winter months. Again, prior reservations are required. To provide you with the best options, we do sometimes use partnered guide services for these afternoon activities.
Or, put down the gun and rod both, and pick up a golf club by reserving a tee time at the Bay City’s Gary Player designed Rio Colorado Golf Course. Considering the excellent properties we have, experienced guides with top notch equipment, a high success rate on hunts, and the kind of afternoon choices available, it's no wonder that so much of our business is repeat business. Shouldn't you be considering making a reservation today? 1-888-TX-GEESE
